The Best 4WD Tracks in Perth
Wilbinga Sand Tracks
Starting off our list is the Wilbinga 4WD track just north of Perth. It’s grown in popularity over the past few years thanks to its sand dunes, fishing spots and motorbike tracks. Conveniently located, it’s the closest you can drive on a sandy beach near Perth.
- Destination: Wilbinga (Between Two Rocks and Guilderton)
- Distance: About 70km north of Perth
- Difficulty: Mixed. There are some easy tracks to take and more advanced tracks for experienced drivers.
- Don’t miss: The stunning beach views that only WA can provide make sure to pack your camera.
Lancelin Sand Dunes
Don’t forget to pack your air compressor! The Lancelin Sand Dunes is a moderately tricky track with lots and lots of sand driving opportunities, so get ready to lower your tyre PSI and get a lot of new sand driving experience.
- Destination: Lancelin Sand Dunes
- Distance: About 125km from Perth
- Difficulty: Moderate, as you are driving on sand dunes you will need a proper understanding of driving on sand.
- Don’t miss: Sandboarding. 4WDs aren’t the only thing taking on the dunes, so pack your sandboard and experience sliding down some of these steep hills.
Julimar State Forest
Taking us from the sand to the forest, we get ready for not just some impressive flora but also a whole new world of driving surfaces and conditions.
- Destination: Julimar State Forest
- Distance: About 88km from Perth
- Difficulty: Moderate, there are a variety of tracks located within deep forest; they contain everything, including dirt, clay, bog holes, and mixed gravel conditions so stay focused and aware of your surroundings.
- Don’t miss: The winding trails and giant trees will keep you on your toes. Why not pack some hiking gear, and explore some of the forest on foot?
Waroona Dam (Lake Navarino)
Also known as Lake Navarino, the Waroona Dam tracks allow you to experience scenic drives and various surfaces like gravelly paths, steep hill climbs, and even some challenging mud pits.
- Destination: Waroona Dam
- Distance: About 110km from Perth
- Difficulty: Easy, although you can be met with changed conditions due to water levels so keep an eye out.
- Don’t miss: Try and attempt this one on a nice sunny day so you can check out the Drakesbrook Weir for some scenic views and great swimming spots.
Harvey Dam Track
Keeping the dam theme going, you can also check out the Harvey Dam Track, just a 1 hour and 45-minute drive from Perth.
- Destination: Harvey Dam Track
- Distance: About 140km from Perth
- Difficulty: Mixed, with tracks for all levels of experience that can change due to weather conditions.
- Don’t miss: Beautiful scenery of the dam and surrounding forests. Pack a picnic and stay for the afternoon.
Hardest 4WD Tracks near Perth
Mundaring Powerline Trail
Not for the faint of heart, the Mundaring Powerline Trail should NOT be attempted unless you are a 4WD pro. Expect to spend 4 to 6 hours taking on the full length of the track, and if you find it too difficult and you need to exit early, don’t worry, there are multiple exits throughout the track.
- Destination: Mundaring Powerline Trail
- Distance: About 34km from Perth
- Difficulty: Extremely difficult; do not attempt without extensive 4WD experience. You will encounter incredibly rugged terrain and ever-changing conditions.
- Don’t miss: The muddy holes! This track is famous for several large muddy holes spotted along the track, so stay vigilant, and if in doubt, do not attempt after wet weather.
Easy 4WD Tracks for Beginners
Moore River National Park Track
If you are reading this blog thinking, “Wow, this all seems too advanced for me”, then we have the track for you. Take on the Moore River National Park Track just over an hour from Perth and get your first river crossing experience and explore an area known for its wildlife and great photo opportunities.
- Destination: Moore River National Park Track
- Distance: About 100km from Perth
- Difficulty: Easy. An excellent opportunity for inexperienced drivers to take on river crossings. The dry riverbed is mostly hard and perfect for beginners.
- Don’t miss: Windsurfing! The location is perfect for windsurfing or a simple paddle board to take in the most of the Moore River from the water.
Beach Tracks
Preston Beach
With over 12,889 km of coastline, Western Australia has some of the best beaches in a country famous for its beaches. To explore them from your 4WD check out the Preston Beach trail.
- Destination: Preston Beach
- Distance: About 130 km from Perth
- Difficulty: Easy, including a lot of sand driving, so make sure your tyres are let down to the correct pressure to give you maximum grip and surface area.
- Don’t miss: The almost endless white sands. Just make sure you keep an eye on the tides, as they move very fast. So you don’t want to be caught out. It’s also a great fishing spot, so pack your rod and reel and try to catch dinner.
